THE MEYL
Two in One
Merge the Post and Main line passenger rail. That way, we can revive both. It does not matter that the government did not declare a monopoly for SAPO for items under 1kg, because carrying both passengers and mail is something that couriers will not be able to compete with.
- They won’t get a licence for it, and
- Mail and mainline passenger trains go together - always did, always will.
How to get started
- Manufacture railcars in South Africa. We did that, too, a century ago.
- Configure them as backpacker and parcel trains
- Start with one outward trip per week, returning mid week. Getting mail reliably every week beats getting mail sometimes or never
- Minibuses lie idle every for hours between rush hours, so contract minibuses to do last mile bulk delivery between post offices and rail
